A Hotel Haunting

Today’s tale comes from Quora user Mark Mitram. When I announced to Quora that I was looking for true ghost stories that I could share on this channel Mark responded with the following tale, which he claimed would be short and boring, and yet, I would argue that often the short and boring stories are the most believable. Surely if a story wasn’t true it would tend toward hyperbole and indulge in too much excitement. But when someone offers a humble small tale about a random event, it does lend a sense of credibility to the tale. At least, to me it does.

Some time ago Mark landed a job at the Promenade hotel, Branson Landing,  as a room attendant.

One day he was in a particular bedroom within the hotel with the door closed, changing pillowcases, a somewhat normal event for someone in his position, that is until unexpectedly the door opened completely, and by itself.

At that moment Mark didn’t think too much of the occurrence, that is, until the door then closed completely, again by no obvious force except the invisible.

A door opening and then closing while alone in a hotel room would be enough cause for a raised eyebrow or two, but, not content with this small show of supernatural behavior, the entity responsible began to continuously open and shut the door over and over again, probably a dozen times or so before stopping.

Mark just stood there, watching this happen. I have no idea what must have gone through his mind at the display of a door relentlessly opening and closing by itself, as he stood there, probably still clutching the pillow he was changing, yet by his account he wasn’t afraid, but rather mildly entertained. It would seem that the mundane nature of his job made this event the most excitement he had seen for some time, so he welcomed it! Apparently, in Mark’s case at least, the only thing worse than being spooked by a ghost is boredom!

Mark finished the mundane task of making the bed and then went and shared his experience with his co-workers in a joking sort of manner, saying how haunted the hotel must be for the door to keep opening and closing the way it did. However, all three of his colleagues, two males and a female, simply didn’t believe his story and laughed it off.

That seemed to be the end of it, at least until, an undisclosed time after, Mark and his team moved to work in another hotel across the street where he struck up a conversation with a utility worker and asked him if he knew about the haunted nature of the Promenade Hotel? The man became very serious and said that the hotel was certainly haunted. He spoke of apparent murders and even recounted the stories of people who had seen objects move by themselves in a certain room. Whether it was the room Mark had witnessed the doors opening and closing by themselves remains to be seen.

I cannot say for sure that the utility worker’s claims of murder are true. No hotel or establishment wants a history like that hanging over their good reputation, so I trust that they understand, should they watch this, that I’m just telling it the way that it was told me. But what about you? Have you stayed at the Promenade and had a similar experience? Have you found yourself in any hotel room and realised that something else, something unseen, was sharing the room with you? I would love to hear your story! Please write to me at tellyourtalehere@gmail.com, and until next time, stay at a friend’s house instead!
